Critical Fall Height (HIC), also known as Head Injury Criteria, is a safety standard used to measure the impact attenuation of playground surfaces. Essentially, it determines the maximum height from which a child can fall and still have a low risk of head injury.

By calculating the HIC value, playground designers and manufacturers can ensure that their rubber safety surfaces meet the necessary safety requirements to protect our little adventurers.

Dflect rubber tiles are one of the most DIY friendly products on the market, especially when installing onto an existing hardstanding surface. If your area needs to be dug out for compacted type 1 to be put down a professional may be required. The tiles can be laid DIY or by a contractor.

Not particularly. Basic tools like tape measure, Straight edge, Spirit level and utility knifes are required. If you are cutting many tiles then having spare blades available for your knife is a must.

PPE will also be required. Gloves and eye protection would be the minimum requirements.

Rubber flooring does require some maintenance to keep it in top shape. Regular cleaning with a mild soap and water solution is usually sufficient to remove dirt and debris. For tougher stains, a neutral pH cleaner can be used.

Additionally, it is recommended to avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive tools that may damage the rubber surface. To maintain the longevity and appearance of rubber flooring, gentle care, and occasional resealing are essential. Yes, rubber playground tiles are typically porous, allowing for efficient drainage and reducing the risk of slipping. The pores in rubber tiles are designed to let water pass through, preventing puddles from forming on the surface and keeping the playground safe for kids to play on. If you’re interested in learning more about rubber playground tiles and their benefits, you can check out our Dflect Rubber’s website.

We offer a wide range of high-quality rubber tiles that are not only porous but also durable and environmentally friendly. So, next time you’re considering playground flooring options, remember that porous rubber tiles could be the perfect choice for a safe and enjoyable play area for children.

Note: When rubber tiles are new they may have a small amount of oil residue from the production process which will make the tiles less porous. Natural weathering will take this away and the tiles will become porous as described above.

SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) are two common types of rubber used in the production of rubber tiles. Each material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between SBR and EPDM rubber tiles depends on the specific requirements of the application. Here’s a comparison of the pros and cons of SBR and EPDM rubber tiles:

SBR Rubber Tiles:

Pros:

Cost-Effective: SBR is generally more cost-effective than EPDM, making it a budget-friendly option.

Durability: SBR rubber tiles are durable and resistant to abrasion, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.

Recyclable: SBR is often made from recycled rubber, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Shock Absorption: SBR rubber has good shock-absorbing properties, making it suitable for applications where impact resistance is important.

Cons:

Limited UV Resistance: SBR rubber is less resistant to UV rays than EPDM, making it more prone to color fading and degradation in prolonged sunlight exposure.
Weathering: SBR may not perform as well as EPDM in extreme weather conditions, as it can be affected by ozone and weathering over time.
Carbon Leaching: Due to the recycled nature of SBR rubber tiles they can be suscepitible to carbon leaching.
Toxicity: Although we use some of the best recycled rubber granuate available on the market SBR rubber tend to have higher toxicity levels than EPDM rubber. For this reason we recommend the use of EPDM tiles in areas where young children will be crawling on the surface.

EPDM Rubber Tiles:

Pros:

UV Resistance: EPDM rubber has excellent resistance to UV rays, making it suitable for outdoor applications without significant colour fading or degradation.
Weather Resistance: EPDM is highly resistant to weathering, ozone, and other environmental factors, making it a durable choice for outdoor installations.
Elasticity: EPDM rubber tiles are known for their high elasticity and flexibility, providing a comfortable and resilient surface.
Chemical Resistance: EPDM is resistant to a variety of chemicals, oils, and greases.
Colour Choice: EPDM rubber tiles have a large variety of colours available to suit your project.
Toxicity: EPDM rubber mats have lower toxicity levels compared to SBR rubber mats.

Cons:

Cost: EPDM rubber tiles are generally more expensive than SBR, making them less budget-friendly.
Weight / Density: EPDM rubber tiles tend to be a little heavier more dense than SBR tiles. This does mean they are slightly more difficult to cut and handle.

Considerations for Both:

Color Options: Both SBR and EPDM rubber tiles come in various colours, allowing for customization based on aesthetic preferences.

Application: Consider the specific requirements of the application (e.g., playgrounds, gyms, outdoor spaces) to determine which material is better suited for the intended use.

Ultimately, the choice between SBR and EPDM rubber tiles depends on factors such as budget, intended use, and environmental conditions. It’s important to carefully assess these factors to select the most suitable material for your specific needs.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber tiles are made from a synthetic rubber compound known for their excellent weather resistance, durability, and versatility. EPDM rubber is a type of synthetic elastomer, and the tiles produced from it have various applications due to their desirable properties.

EPDM rubber tiles are commonly used in outdoor applications, such as playgrounds, sports surfaces, flat roofs and balconies due to their resistance to ultraviolet (UV) rays, ozone, weathering, and thermal cycling. They are also known for their excellent water resistance, making them suitable for wet environments.
